I love it when couples and families do something fun and non-traditional. Cassie and Heather celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary by doing a trash the dress session with an epic liquid paint war with the kids.I knew they were the cool parents ever since I photographed their amazing wedding at Colt State Park in Rhode Island where they incorporated DIY flowers, custom designed rings, and Converse sneakers as their wedding shoes. We had been talking about dong a trash the dress session and they wanted to do a paint fight, we had the option for do this session at Arnold Arboretum or Carson Beach. We ultimately decided on Carson Beach in Boston where they originally did their engagement session. It was so nice to so this with the kids, they were full of energy and incredible fun to photograph.
The liquid paint they used was cornstarch based so it was biodegradable, hence we were able to do this trash the dress session at Carson Beach. It was a mixture of cool-aid and water so it was safe to digest in case it got in their mouth. As soon as the paint hit the sand, the colors were barely noticeable, yay for less clean up. The colors retained their vibrancy on the white wedding dresses and t-shirts.
After the paint fight, we used the rest of the liquid paint on a canvas. Cassie and Heather loved making arts and crafts, I knew that because they painted a canvas during their wedding ceremony, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity for them to paint another one to celebrate their anniversary.
Here’s a big tip for anyone who’s considering doing a paint fight photo session: pick a place that has outdoor shower, or at least a (drinking) water fountain. It’ll help cleaning up so much easier.
This session went by so fast and we had so much fun. I really miss photographing the kids. If you or anyone you know is looking to do a fun or unique engagement, family, or trash the dress session, please put us in touch.
